In 10 years by Yamile - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

When people would ask me to think about my future, as a little girl I would imagine my adult self being a mother. An occupation never popped into mind at that time but having kids and being a mother was something I definitely wanted for myself. Now that I am older, I realized being a caregiver is not the only purpose for a woman, I can be more than a mother. As years passed, I started giving more thought into an occupation I would like to pursue. After attending optometry appointments for the majority of my life, I became interested in the occupation and decided I will study to become an Optometrist.

If you would ask me to explain to you my life in 10 years I would explain to you the 28 year old version of myself, checking the vision of multiple my clients throughout the day and after work I will return home to my wonderful family. Currently for the next four years, I will study to become an Optometrist after getting my degree I will obtain a job with my degree. I am currently scared for the next 4 years because I will be the first in my family that will be pursuing an occupation in health care. I have no relative to ask for advice, I will be independent and have to ask my classmates for help. Which is the reason why I am scared because I have always been a quiet person, asking people who I am not comfortable with for help has always been difficult for me. In reality, I will have to conquer my fear if I want to succeed, and failing is not an option. At this point I will be around 22 years old and completing my requirements to obtain my bachelors. After getting my bachelors, I will then try to enter a school of Optometry to get my optometry degree; which will take another 4 years; the last step to becoming an Optometrist is getting my state license After receiving my degrees, I will be able to put my knowledge in action and look for a job. I am not quite sure if it will be difficult to attain a job but I will worry about that when the time comes. At this point I will be 26 years old, I do not plan to do anything exciting around this age just relax and get stable with the new job and new life. I plan to focus on myself and my life for next few years but hopefully I will start a family when I am around the age 28 years old.

This completes my 10 year career plan I have for myself, at the age of 28 I will have a job as an Optometrist trying to get financially stable while starting my family.
