hope for the future by Xavier - February 2021 Scholarship Essay
The feeling of fulfilment and success to receive when graduating high school should be amazing. For me, I chose to succeed for my family's name. I am the first to come to Grand Forks Central High School. It feels like I can paint a way for the future. I worked so hard to get past the years of school and finally be done and continue in college where I can follow my passions. In elementary school, I wasn't the best at reading and writing. I had to go to summer school until fifth grade. I had no fun at summer school. I wanted to be outside and have fun. The troubles of writing and reading took a toll on me. It felt like I had something missing from my education. My focus from my young age was to get through it. For the time that I put in I could have gotten better at my reading and writing. I would sit and just stare at the paper or the passage my teacher gave to me. There were times where I had to read out loud to my teacher. It was difficult to do this. There was always a pause when I messed up. The words were in my head and when I spoke it was a mess. I always felt embarrassed in front of my teacher when reading. When I messed up it was like a scratch on a black board. When I looked at it from where I’m at now. I pushed myself to try to go farther than others. One day I’ll be successful.
The way I feel about graduating and finally leaving high school and pursuing to go farther is like the end of the finish line. But after crossing the line, you’re still hungry. You’re still fighting for something better that you can look upon where you work hard to get by and you’re still coming back the next day to do something different. Where I can see it is like every single teacher is like a coach. In my years of high school there were times where I didn’t like the subject but I really liked the teacher and how they taught. Those teachers would want to get me in the mindset to come back to school and be excited for this one class or many classes. In wrestling or football I can’t explain it as having a really bad practice not getting the best out of yourself, but you come back the next day trying your best again trying to get something better than the day before.
I would appreciate being considered for this scholarship. Thank you for giving me and students like me a chance to work toward fulfilling their dreams.
Sincerely,
Xavier Perez
