My academic role model by Xander - March 2021 Scholarship Essay
In all of my years of schooling, I have learned that having someone who is there to push you through the tough mental challenges that academics bring is essential. The person who has pushed me the most and who I look up to as an academic role model is my older sister. She has consistently worked a full-time job throughout college while completing all of her school work. She has shown me how to use time management which was one of the most important aspects of school that I had to implement into my life. She also had kept a high-grade point average during college which set an example for me to keep my grades up.
Trying new things in academics is important because it makes you go out of your comfort zone. My sister tried many different high-level classes to try to go out of her comfort zone such as calculus two. This made me want to expand my knowledge and try to push myself academically. During all four years of high school, I attended honors classes as well as taking some extra classes at our community college. If it weren't for my sister showing me that you can complete difficult challenges with hard work I would have never tried to complete those classes.
One of the things that I admire most about my sister was her extremely hard work ethic. Some days she wouldn't get home until almost midnight from work and then have to complete all her school work. Most people would crumble under that kind of pressure but she always was calm, cool, and collected when working on her assignments. This taught me how to hold myself accountable no matter what if there was work that needed to be done I would finish it. I don't think that enough people push themselves hard enough when it comes to academics and having someone like my sister who outworked many people made me try to put in maximum effort.
My sister giving me constant support and pushing me to be the best that I can be in school is what led to much of my success in high school. I would have never seen the importance of work ethic or time management in school. These are values that I will take with me to my college academics.
