College Success (the Wooden Way) by William - February 2021 Scholarship Essay
For many college students, success is defined by pure numerical values such as a high GPA, class ranking, and academic honors. For others, success is defined by social metrics such as fraternity involvement, club memberships, and the size of their friend groups. While these measurements can make for a positive and fruitful college experience, they don't fully encapsulate what success. Success can be brought about through hard work or just pure luck. Instead, throughout my life, I have borrowed John Wooden's definition of success. His definition of success is "The peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing that you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable."
This definition resonates with me, because it emphasizes effort rather than outcomes or opportunities. Every person in college has different opportunities available to them. Academic awards, class ranking, academic rigor, the number of social outlets available, internships, and other college aspects are different for every student and beyond their control. However, what is in one's control is the effort to do the best one can be with the opportunities presented. There is greater satisfaction when one's fullest potential has been reached, regardless of what other people may accomplish.
I can personally testify, that I feel accomplished when I know I have done the best I can do. Academically, this has translated into always showing up for class, studying multiple days before the test, and not being afraid to ask the professor for help. By putting in this effort, it has allowed me to achieve optimal grades and be eligible for magma cum laude honors. Socially, doing my best has translated to joining multiple clubs such as the Black Student Union and Spikeball Club and being involved in community service through non-profit volunteer work and student advocacy. Doing this has allowed me to grow as a person and enhance my perspective.
Going forward, especially with attending law school in the fall, I will continue to use this definition of success to guide my work as a student and member of the community. While obtaining good grades, top class rank, and stellar internship opportunities will be important, it is more important to do my best and take advantage of every opportunity, so I can reach my fullest potential.
