What Makes Great Leaders Great? by Whitney - December 2021 Scholarship Essay

I have personally worked with and for great leaders, and bad ones.
I believe that the most important character trait for leaders is gracefulness. Followers need to feel appreciated and praised for improvements and accomplishments, but more importantly they need to feel safe and uplifted when they are not meeting expectations or not improving. I do not believe in the "participation trophy" mentality, but there needs to be a safe place for growth. Growth mentality is also extremely important for leaders. Many individuals may shut down or be extremely discouraged if they are not meeting the expectations. Leaders may express that this is unexpectable, but encouragement still remains important. Leaders must keep hope alive.
Leaders also needs to have the respect of their followers and this cannot be forced, it can only be earned. Everyone can relate to that one coworker or boss that tries to step their way to the top. Comradery among followers is also important but needs to remain balanced. Showing favoritism to followers can be hard to avoid, but it is necessary to avoid group conflict. It is also important that the leader have the experience necessary to guide the followers. Followers should feel able to approach the leader with their ideas, needs, and questions.
Good leaders do not prioritize themselves over their followers. They prioritize the growth of the entire group.
