Bringing Back Etiquette and Civility by Wendy - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

If I could add a subject to the American high school curriculum, I would choose a class on Etiquette and Civility. By etiquette and civility, I am not referring only to appropriate manners and expected behaviors in different formal and informal settings, but I also mean transmitting and inculcating an inner compass in high school students on appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. I consider it a type of self-regulation and self-consciousness depending on the setting.

Etiquette and Civility would first include lessons on the appropriate behaviors, dress and language to be used in formal settings such as work, school, church, and other civil engagements. Specific lessons would be given also for special occasions such as weddings, banquets, and parties. Some important components in teaching etiquette and civility would include reading books on etiquette and civility, watching films where etiquette and civility are portrayed, and having students role-play.

An addition to these, more in depth lessons would teach students proper etiquette and behavior in different types of situations. For example, how to behave civilly in disagreements with peers, with superiors, and with family members. Not only portraying proper management of civil disagreements would be important, but also having students role-play their new behavior and write essays on their thoughts and reactions to their newfound knowledge would be beneficial. Another example is teaching proper etiquette for students engaging in their local government and local authorities, such as school. Students would benefit from knowing what is the appropriate way to go about engaging in these different community entities.

On the other hand, it is also important for students to know proper etiquette in positive situations such as when they are complimented, when someone is attracted to them, when they are given an award, or when they are honored in some way. I find that many young people are at a loss as to how to respond and react to these situations and many times leave the situation in an awkward state leaving others around them confused as well.

In conclusion, there are many different types of lessons that are valuable to people in daily living that can be taught through Etiquette and Civility. And I believe that this type of class would make a difference in our young adults and improve their responses and behaviors in their communities, and even set a standard for those that follow them and those around them.
