The Importance of Education by Victoria - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Living in the United States, we take many things for granted as if they are a given. One of the most unrecognized blessings that we have as Americans is the ability to get an education. All men, women, boys, girls, and children have an opportunity to learn at their feet, however, not all choose to take and appreciate it.

Many high school students today view school as a waste of time. All too often, a student will ask him or herself, “When will I ever use this in life?” The answer may be “never,” however, the concept of learning is not solely to use the assigned material in life, but rather to open your mind to understand new processes and ideas. By learning new material, we are challenging our brains in new ways. In life, when we are challenged by things, it makes us stronger; the same applies to our brains as well. With each challenge our brains are faced with, they are becoming better developed and much stronger than before.

As our brains develop, we become to develop, ourselves. Imagine the logical stance of a kindergartner versus that of a college student. The difference is within the amount of knowledge they have attained. Although this case is restricted due to age, the same concept would apply to an educated person and an uneducated person. Their brains are less developed intellectually, logically, and emotionally. Without education, the human brain lacks in certain areas such as problem solving skills, logical understanding, social skills, and much more. Having an education is more than obtaining knowledge, it is also to create you as a person.

The purpose of an education is to empower you; to give you the ability to participate in society. An education makes you who you are, from your political views to your emotions, values, attitude, and self-perception. Your education makes you your own person; it makes you independent and less reliant on the world around you. Your education shapes who you are, who do you want to be?

By taking education seriously, one’s possibilities are endless. Each bit of knowledge obtained strengthens your brain and better develops you. As students, we should be taking each opportunity for knowledge as soon as they come. Each day holds a chance to learn; take it and use it to better yourself.
