Educating the Public by Victoria - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The phrase knowledge is power is entirely truthful, which means that the purpose of an education is to provide everyone with power. A common thing in a country is that those in power, have more knowledge than the people they govern. Since not everyone has the same educational opportunities, people commonly misunderstand why things are taking place or why political figures do what they do. The more educated a society is, the better the people are.
If you look at the difficulties that our society has, a common reasoning behind it is ignorance. People protest and cause riots because they do not know all of the details about what they are against. If the public was better educated, we might be able to eliminate the senseless violence that occurs worldwide, it may even put an end to bullying. People get teased and mistreated because others do not actually understand what that person is dealing with. For example, someone suffering from a mental illness may be taunted due to the ignorance of the public on the topic. I want an education so that I can eliminate my own ignorance. I do not want to be one of the people bringing our society down and making others’ lives difficult.
