All Aboard the Leader-Ship by Victoria - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are necessary for any task any person will come across in their lives. Even if not working with other people, people still need to be leaders. If a student struggles in a certain area of their education, they can't just sit around and hope their instructor will approach them about it, they have to be proactive and approach their instructor, or seek out help from other sources. Being a leader isn't just about controlling other people, it also means forcing yourself to do things that may be undesirable. It means taking the first step in accomplishing a task, keeping track of progress, and making sure deadlines are met. Leadership skills are important in any environment, be it educational, professional, home, public, anywhere. If someone wants to be successful, they have to be a leader and take initiative to make things happen. It works that way in any environment, and will always be in effect, from childhood to adulthood, people will always have to be leaders.

Leadership is very important to students especially, because their future basically revolves around how they do in school, if they’re going to have a successful career, or find themselves working multiple jobs to make ends meet. A certain amount of students have been known to procrastinate doing schoolwork, and have been forced to rush things at the last second to make sure things get in on time. That is something that shouldn’t be forced, and those students would need to step up and make sure they have time to do their work, and make sure they do it on time. That’s when leadership is important, they need to make sure they get their work done, and be in charge of their progress. Since the instructors won’t check in on their progress, or be sympathetic to those who don’t have their work, it falls upon the students to make sure things get done.
