Inspire Me First by Victoria - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

Inspire me first. Encourage me to pick up the book, read about something new, and enjoy this newfound information. Encourage me to unravel a new discovery about that subject on my own free time. Even if it’s not “interesting,” make it interesting. Even if it’s difficult to comprehend, decipher it so that I can. Your job is not only to teach, but also to inspire students like me to learn and be curious. Inspire me to become an independent thinker and a confident student.

If you put in effort, we students know you’re trying, so we reciprocate that effort. If you can call the attention of all 20, 30, or even 40 of us students because you are determined to interpret information in your own compelling way, then we will respect you and give you the attention you deserve.

If however, you fail to care for my education or that of others, we will not appreciate the lack of enthusiasm. We will close our open minds and shut out countless hours of valuable information that would’ve been helpful to our own educational path. If you aren’t as devoted as we expect you to be, and we struggle without your lending hand, we will suffer, and that is the most unfortunate thing that could happen to a student because of a teacher.

I don’t come to school just to get through the day, I come to be educated, but I can only become so if you motivate me to do so. Be passionate, be supportive, but most of all, be an inspiration that will be acknowledged by future generations.
