Education & Success by Victoria - February 2021 Scholarship Essay
Success in education means that I have accomplished my goals. Education is something that cannot be taken away from you. People in different countries cannot get an education because their government doesn’t allow it. Especially for females, some countries don’t want them to succeed.
Females in some countries are faced with poverty, violence, and their education is not a priority. They are not given an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to make decisions about their lives. We tend to take education for granted, whereas others don’t have a chance to fulfill their dreams. With a decent education, we can have a better chance at opportunities to make our life better.
People don’t realize that not having an adequate education can lead to making the wrong decisions in their lives. That decision can make us focus on a quick fix like selling drugs, committing crimes, or even selling your body. Success takes a lot of hard work, focus, and determination. With an education, we have the ability to earn a decent living.
An education gives us the feeling of self-worth and self-empowerment. It also provides us with financial security and family stability, making our future look a lot better. Success to me is to make my dream of being able to have something of ownership a reality. One day I want to be able to own my own house and to buy my mom her own home as well.
Knowledge is power, and with that, we can move a myriad of obstacles out of our life. Also, to me being successful means being in a position where I could help other people. By helping other people, we have the opportunity to make their dreams come true and pull them up as well. God teaches us to be our brothers and sister’s keepers by looking out for one another. To be able to feel the sense of accomplishment from helping someone else in need that was in the position that I was in, is a success.
Helping other people makes us feel happy to be able to give. Sometimes it’s not about the money. Many people aren't born into wealthy families. We never know when God will place someone in our path to help us. Knowing that you put a smile on someone's face, makes you feel like a wealthy person.
I define success in college as having accomplished my road map. My brother graduated a year early from high school, which was the same high school I graduated from. He kept a poster board behind his door to document everything he wanted to accomplish. He studied diligently and researched the necessities to move forward. This inspired me to stay focused and to follow his lead.
To me, being successful in college also means having the opportunity to meet other people that are going in the same direction as myself. Expanding my circle of friends and having the opportunity to meet people with different goals, dreams, and determination to become who they want to be.
With success comes a lot of struggle and endurance. Success does not happen overnight. Success isn’t like putting something in the microwave and *pop* it's done. To be successful, you have to reprogram the way that you think, act, and behave. The way you feed that inner hunger to persevere. We have to know that we’re going to face daily challenges, difficulties, and unforeseen circumstances and situations.
My mother always told me to always prepare myself and to expect the unexpected. Don’t confine yourself inside the box and become a 1-way thinker. Things won’t always be what we expect them to be. We have to be open-minded. We can’t just think that what we want and strive to accomplish will happen in the order that we desire.
We may have the desire to accomplish our goal towards one specific degree, but we may have to take a different route. But we always stay positive and have faith knowing that we will have the desire of our heart. My mom went to college to become an interior designer. When she went to a different college they didn’t want to accept her credits. She ended up working as a teacher's assistant and a counselor for a while. My mom ended up doing a home daycare where she could teach some of the children there about art.
Later she was able to do artwork and have some of it displayed in the village where we live. With this being said, God still allowed her the opportunity to express her passionate love of art. My success would be the ability to go to college to pursue my dreams. It would allow me the opportunity to become financially stable and be in the position to help someone else. God says that if you have helped one person, you have helped many. I will try to help as many people as I can to make their life a little easier.
Success is different for everybody. It varies from winning the lottery to getting into a family inheritance. True success is putting in the hard work knowing that someday it will all pay off. God says in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
