Students Help Students: Moving Forward Together by Victoria - December 2020 Scholarship Essay

I think most high schoolers across the country can agree that ideally, our education in 2021 will be drastically different than it has been this year. Along with countless other students, I have struggled to find the motivation to get my work done well and on time. What makes it even more difficult is that there is no teacher in front of you or classmate beside you to help you through the learning process when schools expect you to absorb information off of a screen.
That is why my goal in 2020 is to create an easy place for students to help students. When an assignment is overwhelming, emailing a teacher about it can be even more daunting to a student. But if there are 30 other students taking that exact class at the same time, there is bound to be one that can offer assistance. Many students already reach out to their friends to help with homework, but I have learned this year about how many people are missing that network of people.
I consider myself a lucky student these days; Online school work is frustrating, but not incredibly difficult for me to understand, and I have a group of incredibly intelligent friends that I can come to for help. I want to help the students at my school that don’t have that. School during a pandemic shouldn’t be competitive, it should be connected because we are all struggling.
My goal is to create a place where students can log into zoom, or any similar platform, and connect to each other. Connect to other juniors taking pre-calculus or other sophomores crafting a presentation for advanced English. After a long week draping over an overused Chromebook, students will be able to not struggle through their final class reading alone.
This is the most impactful goal I can make for my education in 2021, and I know it will have a ripple effect far beyond my personal educational benefit.
