Once a National Honor Society Memeber, Always a National Honor Society by Victoria - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
At my school, I am a National Honor Society member. In order to get inducted into NHS, one must follow the pillars of NHS, which are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. At Sacred Heart Academy, nominees must have an overall average at least 90 on a 100 scale or 3.70 on a 4.0 scale, at least 20 hours of community service, active participation in school events and clubs, no reports of bad integrity, and good leadership skills.
In my senior year at Sacred Heart Academy, NHS has helped me retain my character and leadership skills, by having volunteer opportunities, which help me understand how helping others can make a big difference, even if it was a little action. NHS members volunteer at school events such as: open house, incoming freshmen registration night, freshmen orientation, freshmen retreat, freshmen sophomore winter dance, and the blood drive. I have helped incoming students feel welcomed, and gave the students information about going to an all girl’s Catholic high school. At the open house and freshmen orientation, NHS members help acclimate incoming freshmen to the high school life, by leading the girls to a fun and informational day at Sacred Heart Academy. Helping the girls also help me understand how good character can go a long way, because I remember when I was the scared freshmen, but now I’m a confident senior who is in NHS.
After high school, I believe that my NHS days will help me be confident to take leadership positions in college and my future career. I have learned how to be even more confident to be a leader in the real world. In college, I plan to start a She’s the First chapter, which is a charity that fights for universal girl’s education. I know starting a STF chapter is a small act, but the ability to lead a chapter can allow girls all around the world get education, by organizing fund raisers and raising awareness for the importance girls’ education. Later in life, I would like to give back to the world, by doing charity flights for organizations like Orbis International. Orbis is a flying eye hospital, which flies to underdeveloped nations. The most important aspect of NHS in my life, the stressed importance of character, leadership and service, because all members of society must be able to take responsibility for their actions, and help others without compensation.
