The Trash That Changed my Life by Victoria - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
Given prompt (max 400 words):How did you find out about your college of choice?
One day I was walking around my high school and it hit me. Not in some metaphorical sense, but quite literally. I was walking with my friends when a Radford poster flew off the wall and hit me square in the face. Some weird feeling compelled me to take a closer look rather than crumble and toss the rogue sheet of paper in the trash can nearby.
After I went home and conducted my research on Radford it was like love at first sight. If the astounding scenery that was dotted around the lush-with-life campus wasn't enough to bewitch me, the university was also ABET certified in my desired major - which was a very attractive feature for me. Furthermore, the small school atmosphere would allow me to feel more comfortable approaching ever intimidating professors outside of class and get to know them on a more personal level. For a socially awkward young girl who was often assaulted by flying sheets of advertisement, the more friendly environment that came with the small school status was a nice change of pace. It was a perfect school. I felt like Harry Potter and Radford was my Hogwarts. As a Computer Science pre-major, I had a particular interest in Cyber Security. Radford University would able to accomodate my hobby through their Cyber Security club. They would compete in Capture the Flag tournaments, where two teams would attempt to hack into the host computer and each team would gain points upon completion of certain tasks. The thrill and excitement of competition pulled me ever closer towards Radford University and was one of the main reasons it was my school of choice.
A year later and I have never looked back. Every day brings something new and exciting to my life and I have met some of the most interesting people during my time here. I look forward to what the future holds for me at Radford and I look back and am grateful for destiny, for if it wasn't for some loose tape, I wouldn't be where I am today.
Thank you for taking the time to read and consider me for your scholarship.
