Success 101 by Vanessa - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Unlike natural characteristics like creativity or rhythm, one can learn leadership. Being able to learn this skill gives everyone the opportunity to thrive. In order to achieve success leadership skills, whether natural or learned, are necessary. Leadership skills are a vital component to success in college because, they enable one to make critical decisions, cooperatively work with others, and efficiently complete tasks.

Being able to make critical decisions is a key component in any profession. Most people attend college to continue their education in a concentrated study in order to follow a profession. Critical decision making is required in most occupations. Physicians, Lawyers, Police Officers, Firemen, and the President of the United States all make critical decisions. The aforesaid professions also require leadership skills. Leadership skills, whether congenital or learned, enable a person to succeed. Leadership skills such as critical thinking, are used in professions like criminal justice and politics. Becoming a Detective, FBI Agent, Senator, or the President of the United States requires such leadership skills. Being able to decide whether a law should be passed, a criminal should be convicted, or a country should enter war is part of being a leader. Having confidence in one’s decisions and being able to make those decisions is part of success.

Cooperatively working with others is a leadership skill essential to achieving success in college. Students are assigned lab partners, project groups, and overall classmates throughout college. Being able to efficiently work with others and collaborate ideas allows for success. If one is unable to communicate their ideas to others and does not take other ideas into account, they will not achieve success. Leadership is a team effort and can only be achieved if one is able to understand their colleagues as equals. Therefore, leadership skills like cooperating with others is important to college success.

Using time management to efficiently complete tasks is a leadership skill necessary for college success. Completing tasks like projects and homework as well as contracts and proposals are requirements for college and the work force. Leadership skills such as time management allow for success in college and future careers. Being a leader means being able to work efficiently. Completing tasks thoroughly and on time show commitment and ambition to professors and employers. Being lackadaisical in a class or a job reflects poor leadership skills which may result in lost opportunities. Exemplifying efficiency not only impresses professors and employers, but also encourages classmates and colleagues, demonstrating one’s leadership ability.

Leadership skills are vital to achieving success. Being able to lead oneself or a team is an important skill needed to succeed. Such leadership skills such as critical decision making, collaborating with others, and efficiently managing one’s time are required to achieve success in college. Demonstrating the aforesaid skills enables one to achieve success throughout college and later on in the workforce. Leadership skills are essential to success because of the valuable lessons they teach which allow for success.
