My Greatness Accomplishment by Tyriq - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I was willing to take a risk. I was the only deaf person willing to take any risk in my school. I will join in any activity that I think I will enjoy doing. There is no one in the world who can stop me from doing something that I want to do in my life. I am always working hard to do things that I want to do in the future. Everything started when I joined new activities in high school.
During my freshman year in high school, I wanted to play football. I thought it would be fun for me being the only deaf athlete on the team. When I went to my first day of practice I had to do conditioning. I was really tired and I felt like I was going to pass out. I never gave up; I kept going no matter what. I had a wonderful season that year. Then my junior year, I was not in shape to play that year. We did a lot of conditioning that year. I always thought about quitting football that year, but I would tell myself that I was not a quitter. I kept going and I was a little happy about how my season went. When my senior year arrived, I wasn’t happy because I was hurt the whole summer. I was so mad. When I came back, I couldn’t do anything to help myself become a starter. I didn’t get a chance to play in an actual game this year. I felt like I wasn’t treated fair. I was upset, but I didn’t quit the team.
I remember my sophomore year, I enter the talent show. I missed the audition and I thought it was over for me. Then I asked one of my teachers if I could still audition. I was really happy when I found out I could still audition. I went to school really early the next morning. I got to dance in front of my teacher. I made it into the talent show and I was really happy that I could show the whole school that I could dance. I was the only deaf person that entered the talent show. On the day of the talent show I was really nervous. When they called my name, I walked out onto the stage and there were a lot of people staring at me. They started playing my music and I was danced really well. Everyone really liked my performance. I was happy that I could show everyone in my school my talent. My senior year I performed again in the talent show. Everyone was really excited to see me perform again. They were really happy for me. It was really good that year.
I think after I danced in the talent show, it made me want to participate in Southside Steppers. I didn’t really want to join the team because I didn’t want to be the only guy on the team. Southside Steppers is mostly a girl the team. Many people kept wanting me to join the Southside Steppers. I decided to try out for the team. I was happy when I made the team. My friend and I are the only guys on the team. It was challenging to make the team. You had to be a good dancer. I was the only deaf dancer on the team. It has been really fun so far.
It is really hard to be the only deaf kid to take a risk and play sports or be involved in activities. I have really enjoyed my high school years. I made a lot of friends while I was involved in my different sports and activities. There are not a lot of deaf people willing to take risks to do things they love to do.
