Self Discovery by Tyrescha - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
Going to college has always been the end goal, but not everyone is always sure of what they want to do with their life. Most of us just go with the flow of things because we feel it’s the right thing to do, only to realize later on down the line we wasted so much time studying and going to class to be left with a degree and career we have little interest in. So much money and energy spent on something we don’t actually enjoying doing. To make the most of a gap year I would work to build up my skills and gain experience and also save money for school.
Taking a gap year could give me a sense of direction in life. It would give me the opportunity to find out what it is I enjoy doing. A gap year would give me a better idea of what career field I would want to enter and could save me so much money. It would motivate me more to obtain a degree in a field I knew I would enjoy and also make me more excited about my studies so I'm more interested in the classes. Working would also allow me to save money towards my classes and build up my skills and experience in that field. We often times grow up thinking we want to be doctors, engineers, a teacher etc. but it doesn’t always work out that way for some of us. Things tend to change as we get older and learn more about our field of study. So why not take time off from school and discover what it is you love with a gap year. If I knew then what I know now, I would have given myself a gap year instead of worrying about what others would think.
I would recommend a gap year to anyone who’s unsure of what they want to do with their life. We are still young and school can wait one more year. Go discover what it is you love before you start spending money towards a degree you don’t love. A year of discovery could put a lot of things in perspective for you and show you your true purpose. Not everyone has to work for their gap year. Travel the world, learn a new language, or volunteer to figure out what your purpose is. Plan it all out and work towards your end goal.
