Every Decision Matters by Tyler - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

One piece of advice that I would give to an incoming high school freshman is that every decision you make matters. Now is the time in your life to start making a difference. Everything you do will impact your future. Start mapping out your future and setting small goals to get there.

Grades from this point on are critical. Every grade counts toward the high school GPA. While studying may not be the fun thing to do right now, it will pay off in the future. Discuss grades with your teachers so that you understand what you need to be doing to keep grades above par.

Attitude is a big deal now. If you make the decision to have a bad attitude, your high school years will be horrible. Make a conscious effort to have a positive attitude and strive to be your best. Teachers will notice. Keep in mind that these same teachers make recommendations for college, jobs, and scholarships.
Make the decision to join clubs that interest you. Be a part of the student governing body, volunteer your time to help others, learn new skills, and find your place. Not only will this make you feel part of something bigger, it looks really good on applications for jobs and college.

Make the decision stay out of trouble. You are a young adult now, trouble will follow you throughout the rest of your life if you let it in. Stay busy with studies and activities so that you do not have the time to get into trouble. If you have a question about something and its impact on your future go to a trusted adult and ask them.

Keep in mind that every decision from your attitude all the way to your choice for college matters now. Every decision you make can either help or hinder your future. Carefully consider every decision so that you make the correct one.
