Real Life Problems by Tyler - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I was allowed to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would use it to make an after school club that teaches kids to do specific activities that are needed to be known as you live out in the real world by themselves, from college to having a family. Many of the older generations taught the younger generations by saying that we get everything handed to us and get everything done for us. In some ways, they are right, but other ways we just aren’t taught how to do most things needed in life until we face it. Certain activities like changing a tire, doing your own taxes, sewing a rip in your shirt, setting up your mortgage, budgeting your money and time, setting up loans, finding a healthy way to relieve stress, writing checks, learning what a credit score is, having communication skills, and even creating good employment applications are perfect examples of activities that we need to know but are never taught in school. Highschools are only required to teach us the basics of typical subjects that let us get by as long as we have good enough grades to get into college. When we reach college, for most of us, it makes us more independent so we will have to learn these foreign problems on our own, with my after school club we will no longer need to face those problems blindly because kids will have a little bit of background information to solve the problem successfully.
According to NBC News, 60% of people are not fully confident that they could change their own tire if it is needed. That is more than half of the people not being able to change a tire by themselves. If this was taught in an afterschool activity, a whole new generation would have a better idea of how to change a tire by themselves. Given that the information would eventually be taught from person to person in a situation that is needed, it would eventually spread and more people would have the mental tools to change a tire. It could be practiced with actual hands-on work with putting tires on a mock car. In the end, it will be lowering the percentage of people that are not fully confident in themselves and the activities.
Many wish they were taught more about money and how to get certain things done that pertain to it. Now that people are finally off on their own, they need to worry about mortgages, budgeting, loans for school, taxes, and little things like writing checks, insurance, and learning what your credit score. Most have no clue about it since it is not taught in school unless in a financial class, which most of the time is not even given at schools. In my, after school activity, you will become familiar with writing checks and budgeting your money as we could make actual budgeting scenarios and incorporate writing checks in it. We could also look into what options for loans would be best for each person based on what they think they want to do in life. Insurance and taxes would also be taught as they look into different pathways of types of insurances and taxes. Overall, educating them on these activities doing with money will relieve future stress that people would have with this.
Today, many kids are so driven to get the best grades they possibly could so they can get into a good college. In doing this, they lack prime communication skills that are needed to go further than college such as jobs, making friends, and even getting connections with people to help out in the future. My extracurricular activity will be able to set up fake interviews and conversations that will be needed to be successful in those areas. Along with these interviews, we will be able to show how to create a strong resume as long as the dos and don'ts when face to face with people such as interviews. In the end, strengthening kids communications skills that are lacking in high school classes will give them a better chance to be successful.
If my extracurricular activity was able to be put into the real world, many people would benefit from it as it prepares them for the problems that they will face in their actual independent lives. People will be stronger minded in a sense of what they will be able to accomplish with the tools after school activity gave them. In conclusion, Students that take the extracurricular activity will be more prepared for the real world as they have some background information over a broad array of real-world events.
