Always Learning by Tristan - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

From the time we are born, our lives are about learning. Within our first two years of life, for example, we say our first words, take our first steps, and learn to recognize our first set of faces. Information is constantly being absorbed by our minds throughout our lives, but without education there is no way of structuring that information once it reaches a certain point.

That being said, education serves the purpose of structuring our learning. I’m not suggesting that creative learning has no place within education, but rather that it is given a specific place within our learning processes. It is for this reason that we have four core subjects within structured education. They are as follows: Language, History, Math, and Science. We must first learn the basics of these four subjects before we can dive more creatively into each separate subject or branch from these subjects all together.

Once we have been exposed to the basics of learning, the structure of education allows the young mind to begin to think creatively and, eventually, thrive. Who we become both as an individual and as a society has a lot to do with the ways in which we have been taught. To have an education is to have the ability to take on life with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
