The Arts for Emerging Entrepreneurs by Trinity - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
I believe that art classes need more emphasis in school. They are usually meant as a filler class in elementary school, and in high school, they are simply electives. Art classes have constantly been seen as an unimportant part of the curriculum, with some schools even cutting them out entirely. However, the job market today is changing into one that favors the arts, and as such, schools should put the necessary emphasis on these classes.
Today, more and more people are self-employed through the power of the internet. I have lost count of the number of free-lance artists I have seen on YouTube and Tumblr. These are entrepreneurs who are making hundreds of dollars just selling drawings to people on the internet. There is also a large section of the web devoted to selling hand-made crafts. These people are crocheting or knitting stuffed animals, then selling them through social media. This is an actual way people can make money for themselves. All they need is some form of artistic skill and access to the internet.
This is why schools should put more emphasis on art classes. Everyone has the potential to become a successful artist, but without the proper training, it is nearly impossible. Some self-taught artists create amazing things, but even they had some form of instruction. During my childhood, I was constantly using the How To Draw books to hone my drawing skills. I traced the characters in comic books and spent hours reading books on proportions. I have put a lot of effort into becoming an artist, but I am nowhere near my father’s skill level. He attended MIAD, an art institute, where he received formal training in illustration. He had a job making comic strips for the newspaper.
Today’s children are in a world where they can support themselves with art. They can become internet famous and rich because of their drawing skills. The arts are a vital part of our lives and we need to put more emphasis on them in the classroom. These classes aren’t just fun side gigs or filler class time, they are places where skills can be honed. These classes are creating the future of business and entertainment.
