The Spirit Of Success by Timothy - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
As we look to the future, we see that success within institutions of higher learning is becoming increasingly more difficult. "Why is that?" one might ask. The answer itself lies within the ever evolving human society. Improvements in nearly all areas require that humans improve as well in order to keep up. In order to keep human society on its toes, we must always produce leaders who will keep us slightly ahead of the beat of evolution. This desire to stay ahead is reflected in the level of difficulty of universities and colleges. Because of this, it can be said that not only are leadership skills necessary for success in college, but the purpose of college is to develop these skills; if the by end of his/her college career, one has developed the qualities and skills of a leader then he/she has essentially succeeded.
The first question that one must ask is, "What are the skills of a leader?" In my own experience having encountered many leaders, I have learned that they possess two invaluable skills that make them worth following. Leaders are versatile. They have the ability to perform many different tasks. This allows them to handle a variety of situations with efficiency. Leaders are open-minded. They have the desire to learn from others as well as to teach. Well, how does this apply to success in college? The entire college experience revolves around the idea of becoming the person who you want to be. However, people are complex, so it is natural that our experiences (especially in such a transitional point of our lives) are also complex as well as diverse. In order deal with the variety situations that a student encounters while in college after college, he/she must be prepared to handle any situation whether good or bad. This is especially true for those who are on their own for the first time in their lives. The ability to handle a multitude of situations only grows with the college experience. Now, what allows a student to work through these situations is the ability to keep an open mind and to learn from other people as well as the situation itself rather than ignore it. If a student is not willing to accept another outlook on life or another way of doing things then certain scenarios could end up being impossible to overcome. That being said, the scenario itself could teach the student that they need to be more open-minded.
After analyzing two essential skills of a leader and their role in college success. It can be stated without a doubt that leadership skills are necessary for college success.
