Advice to Help Me Succeed by Tiffanie - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

Every teacher has their own way of teaching. Just like every student learns differently. Some go to public schools, vocational schools, private schools and others are homeschooled. Each learning environment is very different than the next. Catering to each student’s way of learning can be overwhelming for a teacher. I believe if the students are engaged in discussions, it’s easier for a teacher to find the best method of communication during class. The best advice to give my teacher to help me learn is to be available, stay energetic, and begin class with a smile.

First piece of advice I can give to my teacher is to be available. Being available lets me know that I can count on you to build a partnership during the semester. It also shows that you care for my success and not just a paycheck. Teachers that teach just for a paycheck get burned out very quickly. Being available can also show your passion and dedication to the subject you are teaching and to the others students. Being available is very important to help me learn and succeed.

Next, staying energetic is another piece of advice I can give to my teacher. When in a classroom with other students, if the teacher is not energetic about the subject being taught it is very apparent. To me keeping the energy in a classroom is very important. With upbeat energy it’s hard for me to become bored or distracted. Energy flow depends on the engagement between the students and the teachers. Many students may feel the same way when learning.

Lastly, the advice I can give to my teacher is to begin class with a smile. I know some days can be harder than others. Although it may be hard to pretend the first one when students walk in, the ones to follow will come naturally. Smiles are proven to be brighten a day. Smiles received from students will begin to make the hard day seem a little easier. Every student may not smile back but I will return a smile to help brighten your day. Smiles are contagious. So smile no matter the reason.

Overall, many students do have different learning methods. Just like teachers have different teaching methods. The best advice I can give to my teacher to help me to learn and achieve my goals are to be available, stay energetic, and start each class with a smile. There are many other ways to help me learn but these are the top three ways I know I can be successful if a teacher follows my advice when teaching.
