What is the most valuable lesson you've learned in high school and why? by Tierra - November 2013 Scholarship Essay

After four years of being in high school everybody leaves with a life lesson. I know that life is not easy. Once I leave high school nobody will remind me to do my work or sign me a note for over sleeping. High school is a way to prepare students to become more independent. That to me can be a hard lesson to teach. Each person expects something different and it is not always easy to do things perfectly.

Diversity is a huge part of high school. There are so many different types of personalities that I have come across. I have met some very outspoken people and I have met very reserved people. At my school this year we had a foreign exchange student from the Czech Republic. This lady is an elite olympic gymnist. It just goes to show that you never know who you might meet. With so many unique personalities I always try to make sure to be fair and understanding.

The second most valuable lesson I was taught is teamwork. I have played volleyball all four years of high school. Without proper communication and working together on that court it is pretty impossible to succeed. I can't play a six man sport by myself. I am going to become a registered nurse and that profession is very teamwork oriented. If I was not focused on what my colleague was doing I could ruin someone's life. I can not always do things alone.

I have learned so many different things in my high school career. I learned how to light a penny on fire in chemistry. In math I learned I may never get away from finding x and y. I also learned you never know who you are going to meet. Knowing I live in a diverse world and that teamwork is essential for a multitude of things are the two most valuable lessons I learned in high school and will continue to use forever.
