Cheerleading: More Than a Sport, A Life Skills Class for All Students by Tierra - June 2025 Scholarship Essay
As a middle school teacher and cheerleading coach, I have the privilege of seeing how extracurricular activities shape students far beyond the classroom. One activity that I believe should be a required class in schools is cheerleading. While often viewed as just a sport, cheerleading is a powerful tool for developing essential life skills leadership, teamwork, resilience, confidence, and communication, that benefit every student.
Cheerleading offers an environment where students learn the value of discipline and hard work. Perfecting routines, mastering stunts, and synchronizing movements require commitment, patience, and perseverance. These skills directly translate to academic success and future workplace readiness. When students understand that consistent effort leads to improvement, they apply that same mindset to other areas of life.
Additionally, cheerleading fosters teamwork and trust. In my middle school squad, students rely on each other in every practice and performance. They learn to communicate clearly and build trust with their teammates, especially when executing stunts where safety depends on cooperation. These lessons in accountability and collaboration prepare students for success in group projects, jobs, and relationships.
One of the most profound benefits of cheerleading is its ability to build confidence and self-esteem. Middle school can be a challenging time for many students as they navigate changes in identity and social dynamics. Cheerleading provides a supportive space where students can express themselves, overcome fears, and take pride in their progress. I have watched shy students transform into leaders through the cheer program, gaining the courage to speak up and encourage others.
Moreover, cheerleading promotes inclusion and diversity. On my team, students from various backgrounds and abilities come together with a shared goal. They learn to celebrate differences and practice empathy — skills that are essential in today’s diverse society.
Finally, cheerleading cultivates leadership. From team captains guiding practices to younger members stepping into mentorship roles, cheerleaders gain firsthand experience in leading by example. These opportunities build leadership qualities that serve students throughout their lives.
In short, cheerleading is far more than an elective sport. It is a dynamic, transformative experience that teaches skills every student needs to thrive both in and out of school. By making cheerleading a required class, we would not only promote physical fitness but also help foster a generation of resilient, compassionate, and capable leaders. This is why I strongly believe cheerleading deserves a permanent place in the core curriculum.
