Extracurricular Support by Thomas - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
I am a Type 1 Diabetic. I handle it very well, keeping my blood in check and making sure I get plenty of exercise. As far as I am able, I'm a pretty healthy kid. Unfortunately there are other people out there who don’t know how to take care of themselves. Maybe they don’t know how, maybe they just gave up, or maybe they just simply don’t have the support they need.
If I were to create an extracurricular club, I would make a big support group, not just for Diabetics, but anyone who needs it. Whether it is an individual with a disease (such as in my case), or someone who is going through a lot mentally, everyone needs support, but not everyone gets it.
The idea of the club is fairly simple, members would meet once a week and just talk to one another. They can take advantage of the time to tell others about their situation to others who understand as well as support and listen to people and their problems. We could pair people together with similar problems for part of the time, and have everyone come together for the rest. Some days could be spent just simply talking and getting to know each other, and others could have an activity or a theme.
There is no requirement for the club, you don’t need to make certain grades or have so many service hours, or even have a diagnosed illness. If you are somebody who just needs a friend to talk to, then the club is for you.
It is a rather uneventful club, but one I think would help a lot of people out who don't have an outlet to express and talk about what they’re dealing with. I’d make a support group.
