My Mothers a Teacher by Terry - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

For most children the education experience is very similar, ride the bus to school, ride the bus home, expect a phone call to the parents if they misbehave. My experience with school was much different, my mother is a teacher. I never got to ride the bus because she took me to and from school. If I misbehaved my parents were notified as soon as my teacher had a free moment to walk to my mother’s classroom. In many ways this was more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

I was always held accountable for my actions, nothing slipped past my mom. Some may say this turned me into a teacher’s pet, but I feel it shaped me into a more responsible person. When I got to high school my teachers no longer informed my mom when I slipped up, but I maintained the qualities I earned in grade school when they did.

Having my mom present at school, I was also expected to maintain above average grades, and I rose to the challenge. I wanted to achieve what was expected of me and more. This pushed me to take challenging classes and work hard to master the material I was presented with.

Most kids see having a parent working at the same school they attend as a curse, but I chose to see it as a blessing. I took all of the perceived disadvantages of a teaching parent and turned them into advantages. I may have had a different educational experience than most, but it shaped me into a stronger student and a stronger person.
