Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not?

As an US Army veteran of six years leadership skills are extremely important for college success. I started my college journey in 2006 and it has been a grind. First, a leader has to make a conscious decision about important issue. Second, the leader must make a plan of action to complete the task at hand. Finally, once the leader has made the plan of attack the only thing left is to execute the plan.

Leadership skills are tested the most when the plan is executed. A leader can plan all day but if he or she fails to execute the plan then the plan is dead in the water. Leaderships skills will allow the individual to do things like prepare for classes. Preparing for classes is very important, for example if one need to bring certain items to a specific class, if he or she fails to do that then that individual will be behind in the class and may even lose the participation grade for the day. Another part of leadership skills that are needed for success on the college level is punctuality and paying attention to the detailed instructions of the professor. These two skills go hand in hand when it comes success at the college level. The professor is there to instruct and if he or she is not there hear the instruction for any reason, then it is possible that the professor may not issue credit for that particular assignment. The best he or she could hope for is that they have maintained a good working relationship with the professor so that if he or she cannot attend a class, inform the professor before hand and the professor may be able to give you the assignment early or extend the assignment due to his or her specific situation.

The aforementioned skills are necessary for success in college. Just as it is clear that preparation, punctuality, and open communication are key leadership skills that are necessary for college success, the lack thereof will lead to academic probation and other academic issues. These skills should be practiced in a setting before beginning college. I say this because it will be difficult for the student to correctly acclimate to the collegiate setting without the aforementioned skill set.
