Tuesdays with Morrie by TeLaura - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

Being as I am a bookworm, I have read many books in my lifetime. There is one book however, that I think every high school student should read before they graduate. In my opinion, a book called Tuesdays with Morrie would be the book to read before you graduate high school. This book is about life lessons that a young man learns while spending time with his old 78-year-old sociology professor who is dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This disease takes everyday small tasks that you can do on your own, and makes it impossible to do them without assistance. Mitch Albom, the main character who is a newspaper sports columnist, recounts all of the time he spends with Morrie before Morrie’s death at the end of the book.

The reason I chose this book is because this story really canvases the importance of communication and love. In today’s society, we must all love each other or we will perish, and this book implies just that. Mitch Albom highlights the importance of forging a culture of one's own to surpass the despotism of popular culture, implying that the media are engrossed with hatred, violence and depression rather than love. This book taught me a lesson that I might possibly not even be capable of learning in just regular life.

If I had to choose a book that all high school students should read before they graduate, I would choose this one, without a doubt. I learned the importance of loving and being loved by people around you and how important it is to help other people when they need you. Life isn't perfect and it may not go as expected, and this book proves just that. Tuesdays with Morrie changed my life in a positive way, and taught me to love and cherish my life.
