Advice to incoming Freshman by Tehya - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
High School is not as scary as they portray it in the movies, but there is one exception. You have to do
your work or else you will fail.
The end of Middle School was fun and you didn't have to work that hard. However, once you're high
school, it is extremely important to take care of your grades. That means trying your very best to have
all A's. Of course that's hard to do, so just try. If you try hard and you have only a B or two then you
should be fine. Most Freshman coming in still have the mentality of a middle school student. That as
long as you have your homework turned in, you're good. You should always do your best on your
homework. Knowing that every answer is correct by looking back through your notes, or book. Try
checking with the teacher before you turn it in to make sure that every problem was worked or done
correctly.
When it comes to tests in high school, you will probably have to study anywhere from 1-3
hours. Based on how hard the course is and what type of test it will be. Always ask the teacher for help
on something you don't understand, then the hours that you have to study, will greatly decrease.
Always take your time on a test even if everyone finishes before you. You might feel uncomfortable but
it really does make the difference between making an A on the test versus a B or a C. Remember if you
fail a test, you still have time to make an A on the next one, so study hard. If you fail repeatedly, you will
have to retake that course. Colleges don't want to see F's on your transcript.
It's as simple as an equation. You have to work hard, turn in your work, and study to your best
ability. If you do this as a freshman, then you will definitely succeed.
