Another Language by Taylor - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

Sign Language pertains to be one of the most beautiful languages that exist. It’s the ability to communicate without making a sound and not distracting others by getting too loud or obnoxious. Sign Language is a way to communicate where it’s more passionate and meaningful. Talking only takes a little bit of energy and can be done by most everyone. Sign Language takes energy and focus, forcing your hands and arms to make just the right movements. Not many people know Sign Language so it also acts as a privacy language where only the people that know Sign Language can understand you as well. Where talking is understood at least a little bit through lip reading and hearing by everyone.

There are about 70 million deaf people throughout the world who cannot hear a word being said and communicate through hand gestures. In no way or form is it their fault they cannot hear or understand other when they are talking but are blessed with the language created through hand gestures. Many times they encounter situations where it would be helpful if the others surrounding them knew how to communicate with them through Sign Language as well. It would better our society to spread the knowledge of the beautiful language and enhance our communication skills.

Making Sign Language available as a class at my school would further my education in foreign languages. I would be able to communicate to a variety of more people and could potentially make a difference if the time came. By learning to communicate in more ways, it will provide more opportunities for me in the future.
