Optimism Is Key by Taylor - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Go into high school with the attitude of an optimist instead of that of a pessimist. Going into high school can be scary and intimidating. The other students are older and experienced. The teachers expect you to be independent and more mature than you feel you actually are. Your nerves seem to be powered by the most powerful battery as they continue to spiral out of control. You worry about falling down the stairs, giving the wrong answer to a simple question in front of your peers, and any other horrific first day of high school story you have heard before. You will soon see, however, that high school is not at all what you are expecting. No one there is waiting for you to embarrass yourself. No one there is rooting for your failure. Do not feel as though you are walking into torture because in reality your high school years will be four of the best years of your life. You will be given freedom that you have yet to experience. You will make stronger friendships than you have ever had before. You will experience many firsts: driving, voting, and possibly even love. High school will be a positive experience, as long as you want it to be. If you go in to high school with negativity, just like any other situation in life, you will convince your mind to believe that your experience is a negative one. Know that your opportunity to receive a high school diploma is a privilege, not a burden. You may go through numerous times during your education process that you feel overwhelmed and as if you cannot continue any longer. This, however, is the most important time to keep your optimistic attitude. You can do it; you can make it through the next four years. Trust me, they will be over faster than you think.
