"The Bellarion" by Taylor - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

The position I hold on my school newspaper, “The Bellarion”, is the school accomplishment of which I am most proud. I have been a member of “The Bellarion” staff since freshman year; since then I worked my way up the totem pole. Junior year, I was named Sports Editor and senior year, I earned the position of Managing Editor. In both of these roles, I was responsible for other writers and the overall quality of the newspaper.
As Sports Editor, my duties included assigning sports to the writers, verifying all stories were submitted in a timely fashion, and reporting all progress to our advisor. I had to do all of this in addition to writing my own stories. During my time in this position, I created a few systems to help me organize my responsibilities. The first was a method for assigning sports to the writers. This method takes into consideration: which writers play in season sports, who are the best writers, and seniority. I also created a template in which the sport previews should be written. I sent this template out to the writers at the beginning of every season to ensure that previews were written correctly. These tools worked very well for me, so I taught both of them to the Sports Editor who followed me.
As Managing Editor, I have many more responsibilities to keep the paper running smoothly. These responsibilities include ensuring that all writers are submitting stories on time, reviewing the quality of all stories, resolving any issues between staff members, and offering help in any other way I can. To make my job slightly easier, I formed a regiment to check-in with all of the individual section editors on a daily basis. During this check-in, we discuss whether or not stories are being submitted promptly.
I take pride in all I have accomplished while on “The Bellarion”. I have been able to manage the entire staff and come up with new, innovative ways to complete tasks. I enjoy working with many people and being able to see all of the progress and success we continue to have.
