Inspiration by Tanjina - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
One of the most important things to me in life is education. To be successful it is necessary that one works hard. This however does not mean that hard work equals success. I have experienced this as I always work hard but I do not always achieve what I want to achieve. Sometimes I need someone to help me and inspire me. To make be stronger and to help me deal with the future. One of my nephews Sheikh Adnan Abdullah has helped me immensely and inspired me in my time in high school. My nephew has inspired me because he cares about me and desires that I will be successful in life.
When I first came to the United States, I did not know what to do with my high school life. He has opened my eyes to see the right path. He showed me how I could have a better life and how to not get in trouble. One thing that has made a lasting impression on me was something that he did when I was in my first year of high school. I had received a reading assignment and I did not understand the whole story. I called my nephew he was not able to help me immediately because he was helping my other cousin with his homework, but when he finished helping him he came and helped me. By the time that he was able to come and help me it was five in the morning. My nephew had not slept so that he could help me with my homework. It means so much to me that my nephew would do this for me and he has done it on other occasions as well. Whenever I have a problem he always helps me, he never says “No” or is too busy for me.
Another thing about my nephew is that he always wants to see me succeed. Whenever I am upset about a mistake I have made or a bad grade I have received, he motivates me to try again or to not be discouraged telling me that I will get it. He advises me to not be depressed about small things, telling me that nobody is perfect and that with experience I will get better. I remember in my sophomore year I got an invitation to be a part of the National Honors Society. I did not know what it was and I did not really want to join the society. He encouraged me to join the society, telling me how it would look good on my college resumes. After hearing his advice, I decided to join the society.
He has taught me about college and education and inspired me. He taught me that if I want to go to a good college or university I will need to have a good GPA, good communication skills, and to improve my reading and writing skills. He helps me when I struggle with doing homework, writing papers, or working on projects. He encourages me to think about my goals and to think about and look up information about future careers.
Finally, my nephew sheikh Adnan Abdullah is a positive influence in my life. Also, I would like to say that life is about learning. Others can help you to learn new things and to build your self-confidence. When you listen to others you can be driven to do great things, but first you must trust this person to teach you the right way.
