Staring As An Educator by Suhey - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

Six-year-old me was chubby, curly-haired girl who loved school and anything artistic. I would sing to all of my dad's 90's Spanish-Christian tapes while modeling around the living room, pretending my parents were the paparazzi. Sketches of clothing littered the living floor as I watched TV shows that I aspired to be a part of. Six-year-old me wanted to be a singer/actress/model/fashion designer. Of course, I was attracted to the glitz and glamor of a life of a celebrity but there was always more to it than that. I wanted to use the fame to spread Christianity as well as use the money to help children across the world. Six-year-old was a dreamer who wanted to make her life one that would help others. Now, as a seventeen-year-old, only half of that has changed.
Through the media, I learned that my modeling career would have been near impossible at my size. This made me want to help other girls like me learn to love their bodies.
Watching my sister's amazing artwork evolve and get better, I realized that art was more of a hobby to me instead of a passion.
Performing sporadically at my church helped me realize that singing was something I wanted to keep personal to me for fun without the pressure of a paycheck attached.
Middle school drama club showed me that acting may always be a dream of mine but my family is the most important thing to me and I would never move away from them to pursue it. Middle school made me want to guide other kids in finding something they love.
Volunteering at my church made helping people my main priority when searching for a career.
I look back at the little girl who yearned to do all these creative things and notice that I never dreamed about the actual job, but what I could do with it. I remember envisioning different press conferences where I could talk about different causes that needed help. I would travel the world to help build shelters and use my fortune to bless people in need. To me, it was never about the money but instead what I could do to help others with it. Three of the four careers I aspired to have do not hold much of an interest to me anymore so the question is, how can I impact the world positively my small piece of it?
In fourth grade, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. Education, or lack thereof, is the basis of so many different problems that plague society today. School has taught me that the best teachers are not the ones who give the most work or even the ones who give the least. The best teachers are those who care about their students. I've read stories of celebrities who lives were changed by the teachers who were willing to help them chase their dreams. Education gives me the platform to work with girls who need to learn how beautiful they are as well as guide children to a path that could lead them out of poverty. Teaching leaves open spaces in my calendar that I can dedicate to mission trips that will still allow me to travel the world to help children in other countries. Teaching allows me to bring historical figures and literary figures to life through acting. Overall, education makes it possible for me to live just a fraction of my childhood dreams.
While being a teacher does not come with the paycheck or lifestyle that modeling, fashion designing, acting, and singing does, it does give me the opportunity to help hundreds of lives. However, instead of using a camera, I'll be using a smartboard.
