My Favorite Study Guide by Staci - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

There are so many people to tell you how and when you should study. Effective studying really comes down to one thing, and that is what works best for you. It is great to get advice and tips from other people, but do not rely solely on that. If the technique does not work, scratch it for another type.

What I find most helpful is to watch videos relating to my subject. Now I only go searching for video’s after I have attended lecture, took notes during class, rewritten those notes into a neat and orderly outline, and finally have completed any study guides that may have been provided by the professor. It is only then that I look for videos on sites like YouTube, KhanAcademy, and even other college’s websites. What these video’s do is provide another perspective that you may not have gotten during lecture. The big thing is that if it begins to contradict your professor stop watching it, in this case, what the professor says is what you need to learn. Now how exactly do videos benefit me in studying? Well it reinforces what was already taught. Even if you understood the material from lecture, the videos could make everything come together just a bit more. By the time, you have watched the videos, you have already heard, written and rewritten and organized the material and completed possible study guides. The video then becomes reinforcement.
