Using Leadership Skills in College by Spencer - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
One may believe that in order to be successful during college you must be a leader. Although this skill may indeed be very helpful to success, I do not believe that it is completely necessary to do your absolute best in college. The reason I say this is because everyone is different, we learn different, act different, and believe differently. If you are going to be a leader, you will most likely lead the way that you would want someone to lead you. This looks different for every person, depending on what interests you or engages you. In order to be a leader you have to be extremely responsible and organized. These talents are very useful to have and develop, but using it for leadership during college may not work out. To me, college is about expanding your horizons, finding what you like and do not like. It is about finding out who you really are on the inside. If you try to do everything, including leading others, you will probably lose sight of finding who you really are. I am not saying that you have to be all about yourself and you cannot accept what others are teaching, but you have to gather yourself before you go and lead others.
I do however believe that college is the time to develop leadership skills because of how important they will be in the future. During college you may want to find how you learn best and start practicing these skills, possibly by leading a small group of people in an activity (book clubs, sports, skits, etc.). This way you can learn from mistakes and correct them for further use. Leadership skills include being responsible, organized, motivated, and setting goals, all of which are extremely helpful during your college life. If you focus on growing in these areas, you will have more success during college and for the rest of your life. If being responsible becomes something near to you, you won't do anything you will later regret. If you prioritize and make organization a habit, your life will be less stressful. If you stay motivated, you can achieve the goals which you set for yourself. Doing this early, perhaps even before college, will allow you to become a leader and influence others and yourself in the process. Learning these skills may seem like a lot on top of every other assignment you may have, but if you perfect these you will have a much easier time in college. I would not say that these skills are the only key to success, but they would be very beneficial.
