Education's Impact on Who I Have Become by Sophia - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

My education has been the foundation in helping me develop into the person I am today. By working diligently throughout my academic career, I have evolved into a dedicated student and a well-rounded citizen.

Going to school has taught me the benefits of being an organized, goal-oriented, hardworking person. When I have a task in school that needs to be completed, I take the necessary steps to reach my goal. I learned that when I prepare myself for classes by asking questions, completing homework assignments, and studying, I am rewarded by making good grades. Having responsibilities in school has taught me how crucial it is to stay focused and work wholeheartedly. Throughout my schooling I have learned that even when a task is extremely difficult or seemingly insurmountable, perseverance and hard work will help me achieve any goal I am working toward. Because I have learned lessons such as this through my schooling, I am able to take ownership of my obligations and work hard to accomplish my goals both inside and outside of school.

My education has taught me leadership skills by challenging me and giving me opportunities to serve others as a mentor. Because I have been fortunate enough to qualify to take advanced math classes in school, I was asked by the Norman Indian Education Coordinator to tutor fellow Native American middle school students with their math assignments. Without having the opportunity to progress in this subject, I would not have been able to serve as the appropriate candidate to help others with mathematics. I learned that in order to be a good leader, I need to not only excel in my own tasks, but also be a positive example for others by being prepared to help, thinking critically, and communicating effectively. My education has prepared me to serve as a successful mentor.

Education has expanded my knowledge by exposing me to a variety of viewpoints and information. As a result of this, I make more informed decisions and teach others about my knowledge. My education has shown me how crucial it is to be disciplined and responsible for my actions, assignments, and tasks; as I have progressed as a student, my education has also instilled in me a drive to lead and help others in my community. I can honestly say that I because I have been blessed with the opportunity to benefit from such a high quality education, I have grown into the successful person I am today.
