How English class affected my life by Sophia - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
The aspect of my education that I am grateful for is definitely is English. When I first started English in public schools, I thought the class was just another chore or piece of school work that I had to do to move up grade levels. Little did I know that English class would lead me to a new hobby and help me choose my my future career path . It was not until maybe my 8th-grade year that I started to develop a major love for English class, literature class, Language arts class, or however you want to define because, in the end, they're almost the same. There were two assignments that my English teacher in 8th grade had my class, and I do. Once, he had us read Edgar Allen Poe, and towards the end of the year, he had us write our own horror story or a story in general, and we had to mix or put the character he gave us into our own story. When reading Edgar Allen Poe, I was very intrigued by how Edgar worded his stories and how he made it so depressing that I and everyone else loved. When we had to write our own stories, I LOVED IT. For the first time in my life, I was able to write what I love, freely express my imagination, and not worry about anyone of my age judging me because they wouldn't be reading it. Luckily, this unlocked a whole new love/hobby into my life.
My freshman year my love for the Language arts started to blossom, my English teacher at the time had us read Shakespeare as an assignment and I loved imagining how the characters in Shakespeare stories dressed and how they used to live a very simple life back then compared to us. My Sophomore year things were starting to get a little stressful because ( being the eoverthinker that I am) I had to decide what college I wanted to go to, when I had to take ACT Testing, find scholarships etc. I was trying to find a nice safe and healthy outlet for me to decrease my stress. At the same time I was getting stressed out my sophomore english teacher decided to have us write poems. At first I was like " great another assignment for us to stress about" but for this poem she had us write about whatever we wanted or whatever was bugging us. I couldn't think of what to write about because I was facing major writers block but then I decided to write about my grandfather and his passing and hos he is probably watching over me from heaven, I wrote and wrote and I saw that the more I wrote the more stress was being relived. After the poem writing assignment I figured out my new hobby was writing, so now thanks to that assignment I journal almost everyday now to get my feelings out and it feels wonderful!
When Junior year approached the dread of finding what to major in when I get into college came. I sort of wanted to go into Journalism but I wasn't sure because I knew that It could be a lot of writing depending on what certain career field I want to take in Journalism is. My junior year teacher was the absolute best because to keep his lesson plans interesting he would add problems going on in the Unite States to his plans and he even had us do a debate. For our writing prompts he had us write about what we wanted to change about our hometown and how we would present it to the Political stand in our town. After that I knew I wanted to be in journalism and speak on people's rights and present to the world what people of color were facing so the world wont be as sheltered and cut off from learning about people of color. So to summarize everything English was and still is an important aspect of my education and now its kinda like my other identity because its helped me get through some of my darkest moments of life and will hopefully help me able to reach out to new people and show them a new side of things.
