What I Consider Success by Sloan - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
In my sophomore year of high school I joined my school's Key Club. I thought that to be successful, I wanted not only to get good grades, but to gain qualities like self motivation and communication, that will be essential to my life. I also thought it would be great to be part of a different community at school and to make a positive contribution to the Tampa Bay area. Furthermore, I wanted Key Club to help me learn to better work with different people. I worked my way up the ladder of Tampa Prep’s Key Club, and this year I was the vice president of our Key Club. This meant that I was second in command, whatever our president and fellow members needed or wanted to do, I was responsible for.
Sophomore year my grades were in the dump. I had three C’s on my first semester report card, and me making any sort of Honor Roll was more of a dream than a reality. Junior year, I nearly made the Headmasters List, as my grades soared into heights they never had been close to. This year, my grades were mediocre, but were not bad enough to put my college acceptances in jeopardy. Being in a leadership position with Key Club had no impact on my grades, showing me that leadership positions are not essential for me to obtain good grades.
By my terms I consider myself a successful high school student, but I am aware that college is a much different beast than high school. College comes with much more responsibility and less monitoring from parents. I also realize that my definition of success, getting good grades, developing good communication with others and self motivation will not change from High School to college. Being a leader in a club or organization, Key Club in high school or in a fraternity in college, will not help me get better grades. However, being a leader, and having the skills a leader may posses will definitely help improve my communication and self motivation, and help me triumphantly move into life after college.
