Bringing Light to Unavoidable Darkness by Skye - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Unfortunately, while students attempt to focus on schooling and positive things in life, the reality is that certain uncontrollable events take place. A number of students in our school have experienced the passing of one or more parents due to cancer. As an active member of our National Honor Society class, I have attempted to bring light to a dark situation, by initiating the Color Run. Members of the community paid to participate in the run on a Saturday morning. Our class mixed powered paints and collected snacks for the run. That morning I woke up early and began to set up the trail markers for the run and distributed the color paints to be thrown at the runners as they passed by. The registration table was set up with all of the t-shirts to be given out to the runners. Flowers were brought that were to be given to the families who we were running for. As participants began to arrive they checked in at the registration table with me or if they had not registered yet I collected their registration fee and added them to the list. The families of the deceased parent chose a charity in which to donate the money collected. The collections were split evenly among the families’ charities of choice in honor of the deceased, in hopes of providing peace among the families that
had lost a loved one. While nothing can replace the life of a loved one, this event provided an avenue to let out grief, anger, sadness, and so much more. The thank yous that we received were reward enough.
