To my past self: by Silas - April 2021 Scholarship Essay
To my past self:
How are you? It's nice to see you again. Five years have passed since I've last saw you, and those five years have been to me, and will be to you, the most important years of your life you will have ever lived. There will be hope, love, growth, and acceptance. And there will be sorrow, pain, depression, and denial. Not only will you discover your faith, your music, your art, your passions, your flaws, and your disdains, but you will find yourself.
There isn't anything specific I would want to warn you about, nor is there anything I feel is worth telling you. You are the reason for me being myself. Though I have my regrets, I do not wish for you to change me. I want you to become who I am, because for better or worse, I am happy as I am now. And I believe you to be a beautiful capsule which contains the roots for my growth into adulthood.
To my past self: There is a lot for you to look forward to, and perhaps just as much to be wary of. I wish you the best of luck into growing into yourself. Most importantly, I want you to know that I love you. You will find that self love, out of all material needs, will be the hardest to obtain, so I hope these words will mean something to you as you age. Goodbye, me. I remember you fondly.
