Determination and Strength by Sierra - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
A leader doesn’t follow the crowd or base their decisions off of everyone else’s, instead they are steadfast in what they want and they act on it. A leader isn’t the type of person to stay out all night when they know they have final exams the next morning because they understand the consequences of their actions. Leaders hold within them small skills that sets them apart from everyone else. These small skills that they have within them holds the key to success. They will be successful whether it is in college or after college graduation because they understand the true value of determination and strength. In college, having these skills are necessary for your success.
My mother wants me to go to a large university where there are crowds, parties, and majority of the people on campus aren’t focused. In her heart, she believes that since she didn’t get that college experience because she was pregnant with me then I should enjoy it for her. However, I disagreed with her. We argue days back and forth because I have my mind made up that the college I want to go to will be a quiet one where nothing ever really happens. This is because I understand that I’m a person who can be easily influenced. If I go to a school where a vast majority of the campus is concentrated then I will be concentrated as well. With this in mind, I will most likely be successful in college.
The skill I personally demonstrated would’ve been determination. I was determined to do what I had to do in order to help with my future. My mother is a great mom, but she doesn’t know everything that I need for myself. In being determined the right way I’ll be helping myself to be focused, successful, and ready to learn. If I wasn’t a leader in this situation then I would’ve just agreed with her and I don’t think that I would do as great as I would at any other school. All in all, a leader doesn’t just bow down to someone. They have their own mind to think for themselves. This is critical in college because college brings temptation in all ways.
Going to college is a new situation, not just to me but to my peers as well. As of right now, none of us has had any of the challenges that college brings so it’s important that we think ahead. In thinking ahead, we will have a clear mind on what we are getting ourselves into. Things like visiting the college campus, doing homework before it’s due, and even paying deposits are all things that take place ahead of time. Without thinking ahead then there won’t be a clear plan for the future. Great leaders think pass their time because they know that in the future there will be more things. Having this idea in mind makes them stronger. They are stronger because they are able to know that their present is only a moment and will not last forever. They visualize success. In college, what will make me successful is if I visualize myself graduating from Regent University the first day I step through the door. Doing this will enable me to overcome obstacles that are presented because I know that there will be a grand reward in the end.
Being strong means that I am able to conquer the unimaginable and not give up. Most people can’t make it pass their first year because they are weakened down by the peer pressure and learning obstacles. I don’t want to be this person. I want to make it to my second, third, and fourth year because I want to be strong enough to handle everything. I want to be able to say, “I did it” when it’s all over. I want to be so strong that people look up to me. When they look up to me, I want them to see a young girl who is doing everything that she can do to be better. I want people under me one day to ask, “Why are you such a strong leader?” I will answer them with the clear understanding that I acknowledge everything that it takes to be a successor in college.
Being a leader in college is everything, it will dictate whether you will continue on or not. It will make you realize just who you really are and who you want to be. In being a leader, you learn that not everything is all fun and games, you do whatever it takes to be better than who you were yesterday, and you don’t give in to anything. Great leaders are determined and strong. They are determined to do the unimaginable and beat all odds, they are strong because they think ahead and aren’t weakened by what is around them. Those leaders are people who will do whatever it takes to be successors and reap the benefit of satisfaction with great reward later in life. However, it starts in college.
