The Evasive Purpose of Education by Shiferaw - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

To go to college is to achieve the ultimate educational goal. In today’s world, college is espoused by an increasing number of people as the gateway to a better future within the United States as more and more jobs are requiring the acquisition of a college degree. With the aforementioned statement, I understand the need for a college education. However, my goals for college are more educational-based.

I am going to college because I want to obtain an education in order to have a good future for myself. In order to achieve that good future, for my first several years of postsecondary education, I will attend the University of Florida and major in chemistry on the pre-med track and obtain my bachelor and associate degrees in five years through completion of the University of Florida’s Honors program. After graduating from the University of Florida with both degrees, I plan to obtain my master’s and Doctorate degrees in chemistry in the best medical school in the country: Harvard University.

The end of my formal education will come once I acquire my Doctorate degree at Harvard University. However, even though my formal education will end at Harvard University, I will not stop learning as dozens of years of schooling have instilled in me a desire to be a lifelong learner. Thus, with the aforementioned statement, I affirm that the purpose of an education is to build a good future through knowledge and to become a lifelong learner.
