The strength of an education by sherma - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
I have always loved learning and I believe learning and education are intertwined. I remember the first time; my mother took me to a local school that I may be attending. I was five years old and living in the Caribbean and I walked right in the classroom and sat down, I was not shy or intimidated. The teacher was so impressed she instructed my mother to leave me there for the day. So began my joy of learning and education, any book I could read, I read and I loved watching documentaries and the history channel, learning new things about people and places. Unfortunately financial difficulties in my teenage years did not permit me to finish my college degree so, I consider myself a late bloomer. I reentered college in my forties and I have found all my years of the history channel and the museums, have contributed to my success in a formal educational pursuit. I still approach my educational dreams with the same joy and enthusiasm for learning and this have permitted me to be successful with a 4.0 GPA to prove it.
I realize the importance of an education for future earnings and stability in my life. It is great to want to learn things but only an education will get me where I want and need to be. Education has opened my mind and allowed me to think more critically, it has expanded my range of knowledge on subjects I had just a basic introduction to. I realize the dedication that is required to pursue my educational dreams of becoming a teacher and this same dedication has helped me also in my day-to-day life. I no longer give up on tasks I find too difficult, like mowing the lawn or doing grocery shopping. But I know the tenacity that I applied during a class I found extremely difficult: algebra is the same tenacity I should apply to daily life. Education has made my mind sharper, my memory stronger and my determination better. I never imagined being in school, pursuing an education would make me an all around better and stronger person. Oh but it has and I am so grateful for it.
