Finding The Best In The Worst Situations by Shelby - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
Living in a small town has taken away opportunities from me like exploring different cultures, careers, and activities. Attending a high school here has given me one gift; the gift of music. My Jr/Sr. High School may lack more than 200 students but it is home to Unified Harmony Show Choir, Stearns/Schenck One Act, Jazz Band, and Fall Musical. The community also has it's own dance school. There are so many different people in each of these groups and activities, each person with different information and qualities to observe. Each activity is also very different, teaching me communication skills, maturity, and common knowledge. They have helped shape the person I am today and helped me find a love for singing, dancing, acting, and performing in general.
For example, one of my favorite activities has been to dance ever since I was three years old. When I was in eighth grade, I got promoted to be an assistant instructor. My sophomore year of high school, I got promoted to teach my own classes. This was an honor and from the beginning, I never thought I would learn so much. This was another one of those activities that helped to create who I am, learn how to handle positive and negative situations, and expose me to the public.
Dealing with the public is not easy. I have learned patience with the public throughout this job. Some days, the kids just don't want to focus, can't get the new steps, or don't want to do the steps. Teaching dance gets frustrating just like any job, but I've learned how to control my frustration. In the process, I've learned how to explain things different ways to make others understand. I've dealt with parents who think their children need to be the star, or who's children have a few behavior issues. My communication skills have increased from this opportunity to be a teacher. I plan on using these skills in the future to communicate with whatever professor I need help from, any employer I talk to, and any customer I might come across in the pharmacy business.
The ability I have gained to teach others and to help others understand my thoughts are planned to be used in the future. I plan to start clubs and groups in college, teaching others about what I love and helping them enjoy it as well. I plan to stand up for what I believe in and what I feel is right, whatever may come up. Other schools cut music programs or drama programs that have touched my life so deeply; I will stand up and make my point known. Tell my story and how these programs have contributed to my success in my schoolwork and social abilities. I can help schools everywhere be a happier place for students because no matter what age I am, I will always remember what it was like and how I felt to be going through what other students will go through in the future. I'm aware of my surroundings, I'm rational, and I have communication skills to allow others to understand my thoughts.
