Personal Equilibriums by Shelbie - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

As a high school senior, I like to think I know a little bit about high school. I have regrets and things I wish I would have done differently, but because of my mistakes I learned a lot and I’m able to help others not make the same mistakes.

The definition of equilibrium is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced, state of physical balance, and a calm state of mind. If I could give incoming high school freshman only one piece of advice it’d be to learn to balance everything early and to find their equilibrium. If we’re being honest, it’s a really hard act to learn to balance academics, social lives, extracurricular activities, sports, jobs, and anything else that takes up time in a teenager’s life.

Personally, I’ve learned that my academics always come first. Grades are really important to me, and I try my hardest on every assignment I’m given. To get anywhere in life, academics is the key and should be the top priority on everyone’s list. It’s also important to give some attention to your social life and extracurriculars though. I’ve learned that it’s valuable to take breaks every now and then before you get too stressed about all the academics and get farther behind than you would have if you had just taken a quick break. I’m not saying to go party every chance you get! It should be done in moderation. There’s only so much time in a day which is why I make sure I get everything that I need to do done first before I can do more enjoyable things.

Every person is different though. It’s just a matter of finding what works best for them. Once someone can find their equilibrium between these things, it will take them far in life and help them get to where they want to be.
