Managing Sports and School by Shaylee - May 2021 Scholarship Essay

Growing up I enjoyed playing softball and being able to have fun with my teammates. I also enjoyed going to school and learning new important topics, but managing both was incredibly hard to handle when high school came. Beginning my junior year of high school, I started taking dual credit classes (classes that count as both high school and college credit). I would get extremely stressed over projects or tests because I didn't have as much time to study or do my project as other non-athlete students did.
Being a procrastinator myself, I had to quickly change my study and homework habits to one that fits more with my ever changing schedule each day. My solution to succeeding in school and in sports is to get ahead as quickly as possible. The longer a student pushes an assignment back, the less time the student has to complete the assignment or to study. Another solution I used was to use any free time I had to study or do assignments during different times throughout the day instead of sitting on my phone. Finally, after practice each day I would go home and sit and do all of my assignments right then and there. As mentioned before, getting ahead on schoolwork is incredibly important for a student athlete putting less pressure on the student each day, especially on game days. Learning how to overcome time restraints each day was important for my grades to be exceptional and my mental health to stay good. Learning how to balance schoolwork and sports is important for any student athlete and a skill needed for life.
Learning how to juggle different tasks all at once is an important skill for adults to learn as there will be tons of different things thrown at them at once. Being able to learn this skill now is important and beneficial to my future. This balance of multiple tasks has allowed me to become the girl that I am today will excellent grades moving onto college and studying psychology there. Though this skill isn't necessarily just a student athlete only situation as many regular students have to deal with tons of work thrown on them all at once. Learning how to calm ones self down, taking it one step at a time while getting as much work done as early as possible is important for the future.
