The Purpose Of Education by Shayla - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

I believe that the purpose of education is threefold. The first purpose of education is better myself. Secondly, I think that education will help me better my family in the future. Finally, I think that education will better the lives of the people in my community, as well as the world I live in. It is my desire to do all three of these things, so that is why I plan to further my education.

I graduated in the top of my high school class in May of 2014. I worked hard to maintain my GPA of 4.0. I was also able to take Dual Credit Classes at Spoon River College, which partners with my high school for this program. I currently attend Spoon River College, and will be able to complete my Associates Degree in just this one year. I then plan to attend Bryan College in Dayton, TN and major in Physical Exercise and Health Science. I will continue on to Bradley University, in Peoria, Il. to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I plan to be a Physical Therapist, and work with children. I currently work as a swim instructor/life guard at the Canton Family YMCA. The reason I want to further my education, is so that I can continue to work with children in give myself and opportunity to be able to provide for myself well as a Physical Therapist.

Secondly, the purpose for me getting a good education, is so that I can have a good life for the family I desire to have in the future. I want to be able to pass on to my children a positive work ethic, and good study skills. I have been able to model this in my own life so far, and want to pass that on to them. I also want to be independent and not have to have someone else provide for me. It is my desire to be a stay at home mom. However, I realize that a time could come, that I have to be able to provide for my family on my own. Therefore, a good education is important to me, so that I can achieve the goals that I have in being able to do just that.

Finally, the purpose of my education is so that I can be actively involved in improving the quality of life for others in my community, and the world I live in. My goal to become a Physical Therapist, is in part, so that I can work with children and their families to help them become independent, functioning members of society. I enjoy working with the kids and families that I do in my current job at the YMCA. Even though I am young, I often have parents tell me that they like and have learned from the firm, fair and consistent way that I work with their kids in behavior management. In working with kids in physical therapy one day, I hope to better their lives and the lives of their families, by helping them find success in the least restrictive environment possible. They then, in turn, can go on to have a positive influence in the community they live in. This influence will have far reaching consequences in our world.

In summary, I believe the purposes of education are to be able to better myself, my family and the community and world I live in. I plan to be able to do this by finishing my Associates Degree, then my B.S., and finish with a Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy. I believe that I can make a difference in my community and world by achieving these goals, which start with a good education.
