Necessities of College: Leadership by Shatoyia - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Am I tragically human? Are you? Are we? There are many who would confidently reply “Yes.” I can only speak from my knowledge and experience. People come from different backgrounds, households, and methods of discipline or lack thereof. From a psychological perspective, these factors contribute to a vast percentage of the probability of your success in relevance to education. In many cases, this principle is correct. However, there is always an exception to every statistic usually through this extremely valuable ability known as leadership, the ability to lead.

When the overwhelming decision about college is discussed, you think “expensive,” “4+ more years of school,” and/or “waste of my time.” Depending on what you desire to do in life, you may only need a community college, apprenticeship, or specialized training education. Nevertheless, in order to go through with these plans, you are bound to encounter the need for leadership capabilities. In many cases, you need to prove your leadership capabilities to colleges and scholarship sponsors in the application process; this small part can affect your admissions/recipient decision. Say you are accepted to a college. You will realize the more freedom you have, the more responsibility you are bombarded with. Before long, college will entice you to become a leader. A leader desires to do something and carries out actions that will allow the execution of his/her plans. This does not mean you have to be “the boss” or “manager,” but it is about taking charge of differing situations and making positive changes or contributions. If you strive to be a veterinarian, for example, you cannot party more than you study. Some are going to say that you should have fun your first year or so, but those same people will probably be college dropouts or in school a little longer than you. In most cases, these same people do not finish college because while they were having “fun,” their GPAs dropped and so did their resources for financial aid.

No, we are not tragically human, though, being human can be tragic. As humans, we are subject to making mistakes. One reason could be because we choose to “follow the crowd.” Well, following “the crowd” may result in your death or the death of your dreams, literally and metaphorically speaking. This is why leadership capabilities are necessities in college. There are so many temptations, influences, and a broad range of people with many talents. You have to possess leadership abilities so you will constantly remind yourself that you cannot do everything everyone else does. It will also help you to work efficiently with others, and be able to effectively contribute to the work efforts. When you possess leadership abilities, you will not allow anything to detour your path to success, and if by chance you do, you will have the desire to pick up where you left off and man [or woman] up to your mistake(s). Leadership is one of the key driving forces to success, especially in relation to college and the freedom that comes with it. It will help you stay focused and ambitious through every obstacle and “dream killer” you may come across. As a result of leadership capabilities, many doors of opportunity will be open to you.
